Why Signals Disappear After Digging

We’ve all been there. You get a nice solid signal, dig the plug, start searching… and suddenly the target is gone. The machine goes quiet or the tone gets so weak you start second-guessing yourself.

This quick demo shows exactly how that happens.

When your coil first passes over a target, you get a strong return because the full face of the object (like a coin lying flat) is presenting a big conductive surface. After you dig, the target can shift or roll. If a coin turns on its edge, the profile facing the coil becomes much smaller. Less metal surface equals a weaker signal — or no signal at all.

It’s not that the target vanished into thin air. It just changed orientation, and now your coil is seeing a much smaller “signature.”

Knowing this helps a lot in the field. When a signal disappears, slow down, use your pinpointer carefully, and check the dirt and the hole from different angles. Sometimes the target is still right there — just standing on edge.
