Sometimes the best gear talks happen when you’re just chillin’ and grillin’.
One evening I decided it was the perfect time to show you the must-have gear for anyone thinking about taking up metal detecting (or just starting out). No long overwhelming lists. No “you need this expensive thing” pressure. Just the solid, recommended pieces that actually get used in the field and make the hobby more enjoyable.
A good detector is obviously the foundation — something reliable like the Bounty Hunter that won’t break the bank but still performs. Add a quality pinpointer and recovery becomes faster and less frustrating. A comfortable digging tool, a finds pouch, and a few other simple items round out a beginner-friendly kit that lets you focus on the fun instead of fighting your gear.
These are the essentials I recommend when someone asks “what do I actually need to get started?” Everything else can come later as you learn what style of detecting you enjoy most.
If you’re new (or helping someone else get started), keep it simple. Good basic gear + time swinging the coil = the best way to fall in love with the hobby.
